Hilda Murrell Murder
Investigating Officer: David Cole, West Mercia Police
Originally featured as a feature on Incident Desk in the July 1984 episode, Hilda Murrell's murder had now been upgraded to a full reconstruction.
Appeal for any witnesses in the murder of Hilda Murrell. Ms Murrell had been seen in the car of a man driving erratically down a country lane near her Shropshire home. Murrell was found dead in her home having been stabbed. Police are appealing for anyone who could identify the knife and if anyone had given a lift to a hitch-hiker along that road around the time of Ms Murrell's death.
Status: Solved
Andrew George, 16 at the time of the murder, was sentenced to a minimum 13 years in prison in 2005, where he still remains today.
However, conspiracy theories remain that George was a fall guy and Hilda Murrell was actually murdered by UK Secret Service. Murrell was a prominent anti-nuclear campaigner and her death was also linked with the sinking of the Belgrano (which started the Falklands War).
Hilda Murrell's death has been the subject of many books and documentaries.

A popular local woman, Elizabeth Sutherland was found dead in her home in the village of Culbokie in the Highlands on 24th September 1984.
On the day of her murder, Sutherland had been out to visit her sister and mother. She was last seen leaving their home at 12.40pm.
She was found by her daughter when she returned from school that day. She had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and neck.

George McPhee from Lincolnshire was convicted of Elizabeth Sutherland's murder in December 1985. Mrs Sutherland had apparently walked in on McPhee and his partner while they were burgling the house.
However, McPhee's conviction was overturned in December 2005. He had always insisted it was his partner Colin Hawkins that carried out the murder and that he had stayed outside the property.
