Crimewatch Episode 11 - Broadcast date 11th July 1985

 Progress Report

Four people had been arrested in connection with attack in the home of Wallace and Mary Foster. One man charged with attempted murder and robbery; one man charged with robbery and two women on conspiracy to commit a robbery.

750 calls were received in relation to disappearance of Mark Tildesley and 30 more officers were put on the case.

The blue Ford Cortina in the armed raid at Edinburgh Housing Office had been spotted in Livingston.

David Beetles had been arrested in Cornwall and charged with theft of cash.

Anti-Terror police were asking for help identifying a set of keys.

Jackie Waines Murder

Jackie Waines was a sex worker from Bristol. On 21st April 1984, she had been seen getting into two vehicles: a red Ford Cortina and a blue van. Her last known sighting was at 11.20pm, walking away from where the van had been parked.

Later that night, a couple were driving along Perrinpit Lane when they spotted a Ford Cortina with what looked like a body next to it. When they returned, the Cortina had gone but Jackie Haines body remained. She had been stabbed multiple times.

Status: Unsolved

Jackie Waines led something of a double life, she used an alias Linda Guest. She had two addresses and was a mother of three children.

Police appealed for anyone who had picked up prostitutes that evening to come forward with any information, emphasising they were not interested in their sexual activities.

A white van had also been spotted along that road, close to the time Waines body was found and were looking for the driver.

The case remains unsolved.

Incident Desk

William Austin murder



Gardener William Austin had been shot dead by a gang of robbers when they attempted to rob the home of pensioner Mrs Eileen Ditcher in Maidstone on 6th July 1985. Mrs Ditcher had also received serious wounding. One of the gang had used a crossbow in the raid.

Status: Solved

Terrence Clark received a life sentence for the murder in December 1986. His son Martin received 10 years in Youth Custody and Steve Dougal received 10 year prison sentence.

York University Rapist


Two young female students had been raped in May and June 1985 in a field near the University campus.

Status: Possibly Solved

A man was being questioned by police but unable to confirm if any charges were brought.

Martin Daley Murder


Police were looking for a man called 'Tony' in relation to the 1984 murder of Martin Daley. Police are aware he had recently been in Liverpool, Staffordshire and Walsall.




Status: Solved

In August 1985 episode, it was revealed a man had been arrested for the murder of Martin Daly.

House of Pipes Theft


Thieves broke into the House of Pipes Pipe Museum in Bramber, West Sussex and stole rare pipes valued at £100,000

Status: Unknown

Oldham Security Van Robbery


Two armed men had held up an Armaguard security van at Daisy Nook Country Park, outside Oldham, in December 1984. They got away with nearly half a million pounds in a large white van. A £48,000 reward was being offered.

Status: Solved

The 'raid' turned out to be an inside job. Three men (including two Armaguard security guards) were arrested in September 1985. Brian Mumford and Mark Dalton were given nine year prison sentences while Martin Haughney received seven years.

Bogus Nuns


Two women in North London had been posing as nuns collecting for fake charity. One of them would distract the victim, while the other would steal any money they could.

Status: Unknown

Though it seems by August 85, they had updated their act and were now posing as nurses.

Church Thefts
Investigating Officer: Richard Hall, Yorkshire Police

A series of thefts from churches around the UK.


A large crucifix valued at £2000 had been stolen from St Mary's Church in Stoke.


£6500 worth of communion silver had been stolen from St Andrew's Church in Gateshead.


£2000 worth of antique furniture stolen from St Catherine's church in Loversall.



A Madonna statue valued at £34,000 stolen from Tewkesbury Abbey in January. Two men had been spotted looking around the Church on the day of the theft. They appeared to be surveying the layout of the church.


In May, another Madonna statue was stolen from St Olive's Church in York. This one had been stolen in broad daylight.

Sidney Noble


Known as 'Doctor Death', Sidney Noble would drug elderly women in their own homes before robbing them of their money and possessions.

Status: Solved

Sidney Noble was given six life sentences in 1986. He was murdered in prison in 2005.


Jobs Fraud


A man was wanted in connection with a jobs fraud scheme. Applicants were told to send £290 to an office in Rotterdam to work for an oil company in Indonesia.

Status: Solved

A 48-year-old Rochdale man was arrested after being recognised by a Crimewatch viewer.

Keith Hunt


Financier Keith Hunt disappeared in 1983, owing debts of £12m. He was a large 18 stone man and his car was found abandoned at Heathrow Airport.

Status: Unsolved

To date, Keith Hunt has never been found.

Dairy Raid

A dairy was held up by three armed robbers in St Albans on 15th June. A red Ford Cortina and a blue Granada, both stolen in London were used in the raid. When the Securicor van arrived, two of the men dressed as milkmen held up the van while a third man ripped off the radio aerial on the roof.


Status: Solved

Ronald Simpson and David Smith had been released after three years in prison in 1982, following their conviction for 80 robberies after turning 'Supergrass'. But between 1982-86 they carried out a whole series of armed robberies.
In June 1987, Simpson admitted to 15 offences and asked 19 others be taken into consideration. He received 21 years. Smith had committed suicide three weeks after his arrest. Paul Smith (David's nephew) received 15 years and Leslie Waters received 13 years.
