Crimewatch Episode 10 - Broadcast date: 13th June 1985

The one year anniversary edition of Crimewatch.

Progress Report

A red car from lasts months Incident Desk had now been identified and a man arrested in connection to the murder of widow Pamela Reynolds in Worthing.

The body of Myfanwy Jones had now been found on a farm in Bala. Police were now excavating the farm in an attempt to find Ms Peggy Goodman.

In the case of Hastings Fire, police were now convinced a petrol can found at the scene had been taken from a nearby garage. There may have been a possible link to a man who had shot himself on Eastbourne beach the morning after the fire.

A man had been arrested for murder of Caroline Osborne, as well as nurse Amanda Whedon.

Last months Aladdin's Cave had proved a huge success with nearly all items being claimed.


Edinburgh Armed Robbery

Investigating Officer: Tom Sneddon, Lothian and Borders Police



On 1st March 1985, three men armed with shotguns robbed a Securicor guard collecting the days takings from Edinburgh district housing office. The Securicor van chased the gang across the city, twice ramming into them but eventually lost the gang.

Mark Tildesley

Investigating Officer: Tony Miller, Thames Valley Police

Originally featured on Incident Desk in June 1984, Crimewatch were now giving the case a full re-construction. Police were putting out another appeal for information on whereabouts of Mark Tildesley, a 7 year old who had disappeared from a fun fair in Wokingham on 1st June 1984.


Status: Solved

Mark's body has never been found but Leslie Bailey confessed to his murder in 1991. Bailey was a member of the 'Dirty Dozen' paedophile gang, led by Sidney Cooke.
Members of the gang were convicted of the murder of three children (Tildesley, Barry Lewis and Jason Swift) but believed to have been responsible for up to 20.
Bailey was murdered by a fellow inmate in 1993. Cooke remains in his prison with his most recent appeal for parole in 2025 having been rejected.

Birmingham Building Society Robbers



Two men who had robbed three building societies around Birmingham in Sheldon, Sparkhill and Quinton areas.

Status: Unknown

Stepney Sexual Assaults


A man posing as a family doctor, tricked his way into peoples homes on three occasions before indecently assaulting people in the property.

Status: Unknown

Cliche Robbery Beaconsfield


Using a bomb scare for cover, four thieves disguised as workmen stole £120,000 worth of designer clothes and shoes from a boutique in Beaconsfield on 12th May.

Status: Unknown

Whittington Hospital Fire


A fire broke out at Whittington Hospital on 28th May. Nobody was hurt in the fire but est. £500,000 worth of damage was done to the building. Police were appealing for anyone with information on the arsonist to come forward.

Machinery Fraud


Thames Valley Police were looking for anyone who had seen David Beetles. Mr Beetles was wanted in connection with £168,000 fraud for sale of machinery parts.

Status: Solved

David Beetles was arrested after being identified by a Crimewatch viewer. He was sentenced to 2 and a half years in prison for fraud.

Police were looking to find out where recovered Christian artefacts had originated from.

Weybridge Home Shooting
Investigating Officer: John Gladwell, Surrey Police




On 22nd April 1985 at around 2am, two men broke into the home of Wallace and Mary Foster in Weybridge.
The raiders tied the couple to the bed and threatened to sexually assault Mary Foster. Husband Wallace got free and shot at the robbers. He was himself shot three times. 
The robbers escaped with £2000 cash and some jewellery.

Status: Solved

Two men were arrested and jailed for 15 and 18 years but no specific details found on the robbers.

Crimewatch Episode 9 - Broadcast date: 2nd May 1985

Progress Report

Three men were arrested in connection with robbery of a Building Society in East Ham. 

There had been no major updates in murder of Hilda Murrell but one line of inquiry had been closed down.

No developments in murder of Elizabeth Sutherland or Veronique Marre disappearance.

A man had been convicted for attempted rape and GBH on a German tourist in the New Forest.

Conman Stuart Alexander/Alexander Hamilton had been arrested after being recognised by a viewer. He had been arrested while the show was still on air and been charged on three counts of obtaining money by deception.

Hastings Fire

Investigating Officer: Bill Clements, Sussex Police



On 3rd February 1985, a fire broke out at the home of the Goble family in Hastings. The fire brigade were called at 3.52am. Neighbours had been able to rescue Robert and Lee Goble but their two children Mary and Robert were trapped in the back bedroom.

Investigations found the fire had been started deliberately. A red van had been seen near the house with an oil can at approximately 1.45am. A man was seen running away from the house shortly before the fire brigade was called. There was also a mysterious man in a white crash helmet who was one of the first on the scene.

Status: Unsolved

Despite numerous appeals for witnesses to come forward, the crime remains unsolved.

Incident Desk

Connie Aris Murder


Connie Aris, 73, was found battered to death in her home in Cheltenham on 27th February 1985. She had been hit five times with an axe. Jewellery had been stolen from her home.

Status: Unsolved

Police interviewed 4,500 people but no charges were ever brought. The murder weapon was never found and the solitary fingerprint at the scene never identified.


Horse Tack Theft


£18,000 worth of horse tack was stolen from a saddlers in Dorchester on 17th February 1985.

Evelyn Ake Disappearance


Evelyn Ake had been missing from her home in North Yorkshire since 4th January. Her car was parked outside North Allerton train station. Her husband Gordon said he had received two anonymous calls from a woman claiming to know where her his wife is.

Status: Solved

Evelyn Ake had been killed by her husband Gordon during a fight. Gordon had been having an affair and pushed Evelyn during their argument. Evelyn died from her injuries and Gordon Ake burned her body. He was eventually charged by police in June 1985 after they dug up Evelyn's remains on their land.

Gordon Ake pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a three year jail sentence.

Cardiff Watches Theft



£22,000 worth of watches were stolen from Ernest Jones jewellers in Cardiff on 16th January at 5pm. The thieves used a sledgehammer to break the windows of the store.

Photocall

James Rae


James Rae was wanted in connection with the shooting of a man in Andover, who was in critical condition. Rae had been on the run since March.

Status: Solved

James Rae shot Mr Keith Harman with a low-velocity bullet from a home-made gun. Rae had recently split from his girlfriend of seven years and was trying to frighten Harman off. Harman recovered from his injuries but Rae was sentenced to eight years for intent to cause grevious bodily harm in November 1986.

Klaus Busam


Wanted by Scotland Yard in connection with a £3million fraud.

Status: Unknown

Ian Elliott


Ian Elliott had been missing from his home in Whitfield, Northumberland since 19th December 1983. Police suspect possible foul play.

Status: Solved

Ian Elliott's body was eventually found in nearby Monks Wood in April 1988. A shotgun was found with the body. A coroner's inquest in June ruled it was a suicide though there was no known reason as to why he would take his own life.

Worthing Murder Car


Sussex Police were looking to trace a red Ford Sierra car in connection with a murder in Worthing.

Status: Solved

In the June 1985 episode of Crimewatch, it was revealed the car was wanted in relation to the murder of Pamela Reynold's.
Ms Reynold's, 68, had been tied-up and strangled inside her own home on 30th April 1985.
Stephen Filkins was given a life sentence for her murder in July 1986.

Peggy Goodman/Myfanwy Jones


82 year old Peggy Goodman, a prominent CND member who lived near Corwen in North Wales disappeared on 19th December 1982 after leaving her home to buy groceries. 


Myfanwy Jones was another local Corwen woman, who vanished on 4th January 1985. She had decided to walk home to Corwen after visiting a friend in nearby Llangollen.

The Welsh Police believe the two cases might be connected.

Status: Unsolved

Myfanwy Jones' body was found buried behind a barn on a farm in Bala on 7th June 1985.
Mr Gareth Wyn Thomas, the owner of the farm, would have likely been charged with her murder however, he had committed suicide on 10th January, 6 days after Myfanwy's disappearance.
Myfanwy's family had at one stage attempted to sue the estate of Gareth Wyn Thomas but this action was dropped in September 1985.

Peggy Goodman has never been found.

Aladdin's Cave


This months collection of recovered stolen goods comes from Hertfordshire and Cheshire Police.
Of interest to John Bly are: a medieval statue of a young girl; a statue of a granny sleeping in an armchair; Japanese laughing Buddha statue 'Hotai'; 19th century lampstands; a silver water pitcher; a silver cup from an American tennis association from 1833; a large silver table centrepiece and a gold disc belonging to 'Nigel Hater Preston' (this could possibly be Nigel Preston, drummer for Theatre of Hate and The Cult)


Karen Young Armed Robbery


Former model and singer Karen Young was now running an Estate Agents in Beaconsfield. On 23rd February 1985, two armed men burst into the office, beating both Karen and her partner Keith Haines repeatedly. They were both hospitalised as a result. The thieves stole diamond rings from Ms Young valued at £250,000. The ring was uninsured and Karen Young was offering a £20,000 reward to catch the thieves.

Status: Solved

Two men were jailed for the robbery but could not find any specific details.

Crimewatch Episode 8 - Broadcast date: 21st March 1985

 Progress Report

Three people had been arrested in connection with the Epping burglary.

In the Chippenham Jewellers robbery, three men had now been arrested.

The hairspray thieves had been arrested after a farmer who was watching the show recognised the trailer that had been left on his land.

An update on the Christopher Lavarack case: fibres taken from the carpet bag Lavarack was found in allowed the police to identify the kind of carpet the bag had been used to carry.


Hilda Murrell Murder
Investigating Officer: David Cole, West Mercia Police




Originally featured as a feature on Incident Desk in the July 1984 episode, Hilda Murrell's murder had now been upgraded to a full reconstruction.

Appeal for any witnesses in the murder of Hilda Murrell. Ms Murrell had been seen in the car of a man driving erratically down a country lane near her Shropshire home. Murrell was found dead in her home having been stabbed. Police are appealing for anyone who could identify the knife and if anyone had given a lift to a hitch-hiker along that road around the time of Ms Murrell's death.

Status: Solved

Andrew George, 16 at the time of the murder, was sentenced to a minimum 13 years in prison in 2005, where he still remains today.

However, conspiracy theories remain that George was a fall guy and Hilda Murrell was actually murdered by UK Secret Service. Murrell was a prominent anti-nuclear campaigner and her death was also linked with the sinking of the Belgrano (which started the Falklands War).

Hilda Murrell's death has been the subject of many books and documentaries.

Haverhill Sex Attacker



A girl had been attacked while walking near Haverhill Sports Centre. The attacker then used the victims credit card to make a number of withdrawals in towns around the area.

Status: Unknown

Last found update from June 1985 shows the attacker was still at large.

Hatton Garden Diamond Robbery


Two armed men robbed a security guard carrying £330,000 worth of diamonds from a firm in Hatton Garden. They pushed the security guard into a lift before escaping in the crowds at Holborn.

Building Society Robber


An armed robber who had already featured before on Crimewatch Incident Desk, had now struck at 15 building societies.

Status: Solved

'Pink Panther' raider David Miller, stole £23,000 from building societies in eight different counties. He was arrested in May 1985 and sentenced to nine years in October.

Oldham Wages Attempted Robbery


A man attempted to steal wages from Delta Accessories in Oldham on 20th December 1984. The man was brandishing a shotgun but a security guard was able to wrestle it away from him and hit him over the head with it. The man escaped in a blue Ford Sierra car.

East Ham Building Society Robber


A man robbed a Nationwide Building Society on 16th October 1984 in East Ham London.

Status: Solved

In the May 1985 edition of Crimewatch, it was stated three men had been arrested in connection with the robbery.

Desmond Quigley


Police were searching for Desmond Quigley in relation to the murder of 70 year old Lancashire antiques dealer John Ward in December 1984.

Status: Solved

Quigley was later arrested and made to stand trial for John Ward's murder. He was given a life sentence in March 1987.

Veronique Marre Disappearance


French student Veronique Marre was visiting the Lake District on a walking holiday. Veronique was last seen on 31st July 1983, leaving Wasdale Youth Hostel.
The appeal to find Veronique was made in co-operation with French TV show Au Nom de L'amour.

Status: Solved

Veronique's body was found near West Water, overlooking the lake in May 1985.
Police ruled out any foul play.

Elizabeth Sutherland Murder
Investigating Officer: Andrew Lister, Northern Constabulary



A popular local woman, Elizabeth Sutherland was found dead in her home in the village of Culbokie in the Highlands on 24th September 1984.
On the day of her murder, Sutherland had been out to visit her sister and mother. She was last seen leaving their home at 12.40pm.

She was found by her daughter when she returned from school that day. She had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and neck.

Status: Unsolved

George McPhee from Lincolnshire was convicted of Elizabeth Sutherland's murder in December 1985. Mrs Sutherland had apparently walked in on McPhee and his partner while they were burgling the house.
However, McPhee's conviction was overturned in December 2005. He had always insisted it was his partner Colin Hawkins that carried out the murder and that he had stayed outside the property.

Crimewatch Episode 7 - Broadcast date 21st January 1985

 Progress Report

A woman came forward in the case of the unidentified Bedgebury Forest Woman, stating she was the one who made the dress she was wearing. They know the dress went to auction but were now looking for the person who either bought or altered it.

Calls received on rape of an eleven year old girl outside Moston Youth Centre led to a man being charged by police for indecent assault. This was not however, connected to the offence featured.

Con-man Alexander Hamilton had been arrested and charged by Sussex Police while the show was still on the air.

Austin John McCormick had now been traced and had been charged with the murder of William Osu (for which he was later cleared).

PC John Thorpe came on the show to make a personal appeal in the John Speed murder case. Thorpe had been shot in the incident but survived his injuries. He appealed to the second man to come forward with any information.

Mark Yendell "Bristol Docks Murder"

Investigating Officer: Jeff Butler, Avon & Somerset Constabulary


On 10th September 1984, rail worker Mark Yendell was beaten in the head at Bristol Temple Meads station and his body then dumped in Bristol docks.

The motive for the murder is unknown. A large amount of money was found in his car that had been left parked at an unusual angle at Temple Meads station, suggesting it could have been moved and then returned.

Two men had been seen on a train between Cardiff and Bristol, allegedly looking for a moustached man who worked the train buffet car. This may have been coincidental.

Status: Unsolved

Mark Yendell had reunited with his wife Sue six weeks before his murder. She had previously left him for another man, Edward Witt but had since gone back to Mark. Witt was charged with his murder 10 days after the investigation began but was later cleared. Sue had always claimed Witt was innocent and that he and Mark were "friends, not enemies."

Six people in total were arrested during the course of the investigation but nobody else has been charged.

James Baigrie


Convicted murderer James Baigrie had escaped from Saughton jail in October 1983. He was regarded as very dangerous and members of the public were warned not to approach him.

Status: Solved

On 20th March 1985, Baigrie was tracked to Earls Court in London. A two day siege followed and Baigrie holed himself up inside a white van armed with a shotgun. The seige ended on the 22nd March, when police launched CS gas canisters into the van. When the van was opened, it was found Baigrie had shot himself in the face with his shotgun.

George MacKay


George Mackay was also an inmate of Saughton prison and convicted murderer. He had been on the run since 28th December 1984.

Status: Solved

Mackay had been given a licence to leave the prison on a government 'Training for Freedom' programme but had not returned. He was later apprehended.

Mackay was originally sent to prison in 1975 for murder and given a life sentence. He made repeated attempts to escape, all of them failed.

George Mackay passed away from cancer in February 2021, just days before he was set to be given compassionate leave from prison.

Colin Maxwell


13-year-old Colin Maxwell originally from Scotland but living in Streatham, had been missing since 19th February 1984. He had been sent on a shopping trip by his mother but had not been seen since.

Status: Unsolved

Colin's remains were unearthed behind a residence in Streatham Common North. The prime suspect was Albert Newman, who had been Colin's mother's boyfriend at the time but police did not have enough evidence to prosecute.

The case was re-opened in 2002 and Newman was charged with the murder. This was apparently based on a conversation he had with a prison officer in which he confessed to the killing.

However, when the case came to trial in January 2004, it was ruled that Newman was not mentally fit and his confession was unreliable.

Marion Hodge


On 6th July 1984, Marion Hodge had been driven from her home in Lockerbie and dropped off in the Whitesands area of Dumfries. Nobody had seen her since.

Status: Unsolved

Marion Hodge has never been found. Despite their being no body, her husband William Hodge was due to be tried for her murder in February 2025. However, due to his diminished mental capabilities, it was ruled he was unfit to stand trial.

Berkhamsted Rapist

Investigating Officer: Michael Buttle, Hertfordshire Constabulary

Between November and December 1984, three teenage girls were attacked and raped by a balaclava wearing man in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. One other girl had a fortunate escape. The man would bring them to a secluded area at knifepoint before carrying out his assaults.

Status: Solved

New DNA evidence allowed police to convict Paul Drinkwater for the rapes in 2015. He was sentenced to 29 years in prison on two counts of rape, indecent assault and robbery.

Chippenham Jewellery Theft


Three young men played out an elaborate plan to steal £12,000 worth of gold chains from Chas Hart's jewellers in Chippenham on 12th November 1984.

Status: Solved

In the March 85 edition of Crimewatch, it was revealed three men had been arrested.

Terry Wright stabbing

In Shepherd's Bush on 21st December 1984, detective Terry Wright chased after a man who had robbed Fenton's store on the High Street. He was stabbed by the robber who escaped in a purple Ford Cortina.

Status: Solved

Cecil Croasdale had already been given a life-sentence for the murder of restaurant worker Tai Hing Hau but during his trial in May 1986, he was named by his co-defendant Desmond Hayden as the man who stabbed Terry Wright. Croasdale received an additional 13 years on his sentence.

Clock Theft

Clocks valued at £70,000 were stolen from the home of a widow in Torquay in November 1984.


Status: Unknown

Police stated they had received tip-offs from the 'criminal element' but it is unknown if the clocks were recovered.

Hairspray Thieves


A trailer loaded with 31,000 cans of hairspray was stolen from a lay-by near Weston-Super-Mare on 2nd January 1985.

Status: Solved

The gang were apparently unaware of what it was they stole. They asked a farmer if they could leave the trailer on their land until they returned.

The farmer agreed but unfortunately for the thieves, the farmer was a Crimewatch viewer who recognised the trailer. When the gang returned, police were waiting to arrest them. They received sentences between six to 18 months.

Epping Burglary

Investigating Officer: Derek Cass, Essex Police



On 14th December 1984, Brian and Jillian Mitchell along with their son Dean were brutally attacked inside their own home by a trio of armed robbers. Their dog Jumbo, was killed during the raid.

Status: Solved

An informant named 'Ernie' shopped the gang in exchange for a £1000 reward. Ernie, a criminal himself, was apparently disgusted by the violence of the gang. The gang received prison sentences of 8-14 years.
